Few bassists balance sensitivity and drive quite like Jack Garside. A key voice in the new wave of British jazz, he has become known for his deeply melodic playing, steady rhythmic command, and an instinct for collaboration that elevates every ensemble he joins.
Originally from the north of England, Garside studied at Leeds College of Music, where his talent quickly drew attention across the UK scene. Since relocating to London, he has performed with a range of acclaimed artists and groups, including the celebrated collective The Banger Factory, led by trumpeter Mark Kavuma, with whom he has toured internationally and recorded extensively.
His versatility spans double and electric bass, from intimate jazz trios to full-scale big band settings. A musician equally at home laying down a subtle groove or shaping lyrical solos, Garside’s tone and timing have made him a sought-after session player for both live and studio work.
Alongside performing, he is an active educator, teaching jazz and ensemble workshops throughout the UK, where his calm, communicative style helps nurture the next generation of improvisers.
In every project, Jack Garside brings a grounded energy and musical honesty that define his approach: quietly confident, always listening, and deeply in service of the song.
